A hand-drawn pixel font for Traditional Mongolian Script, made for games.
Bichig runs top to bottom, in columns from left to right. So a dialogue box fills column by column. Walk with the arrows or the buttons, or let the hero walk alone.
Using Godot? Our free add-on godot-bichig sets bichig in columns, just like this.
Works at any size. Pixel-perfect at 16 px and its multiples: 32, 48, 64. The Mini at 12, 24, 36.
Every letter is a few strokes: tooth, bow, loop, tail. Each is one pixel thick. All meet on one column, the spine, in red here.
Inside: every letter, digit and mark of bichig, plus Latin and Mongolian Cyrillic.
Bichig letters change shape with their place in the word and their neighbours. The font does the joining for you: it follows the current Unicode model, with its own drawing for every join that needs one.
b + l + aAfter b, the horn of l stands clear of the bow.a + b + mB and a final m are one drawing: the bow runs on as the tail of m.a + m + l + aM is written whole, and the horn of l rises beside its own.a + n + · + aBefore a separated suffix, final n keeps its dot and the a tucks under it.a + sh + l + aThe two dots of sh stand clear of the horn that rises after them.e + g + m + eG joins m: the bow turns outward and comes down as the horn. The same words in each. Gege Pixel and Shahaa share one drawing: same pixels, different room between letters. The Mini is redrawn on a smaller grid.
Gege Pixel The one to reach for. Three pixels of spine between letters, so no horn or tail touches its neighbour.
Shahaa Gege Pixel, tighter: two pixels of spine between letters, so more text fits.
Mini Twelve pixels across. We're trying something even more compact and pixely. It's our most proud work yet.
